I found this cute Retro Camper Fabric by Maywood Studios, “Roam Sweet Home”. I made this sweet little zipper pouch.
I have several friends who have vintage campers. I am making some for them and while I was at the sewing machine I decided to do a tutorial for you. I hope it makes sense.
I used fat quarters. Cut 2 – 5″ x 7″ each: cute fabric, fusible interfacing, and lining fabric. Cut 4 – 1.5″ x 1.5″ for tab ends. I used a 9″ zipper.
Fuse the camper or other outer fabric and the interfacing or quilt batting together, following fusing directions.
For this size little bag, I cut a 1 inch square from the lower corners. This creates triangle sides.
If you want a flat bag, skip this step Don’t cut the square.
Folded edge of the tab needs to be 1 inch in from the edge of the fabric. Double check placement before you stitch.
On each end of the zipper, stitch 2 of the tab pieces, right sides together. 1/2 inch seam.
Cut off the excess zipper and fabric.
Press the tabs as above. VERY IMPORTANT STEP: LEAVE ZIPPER OPEN UNTIL VERY LAST STEP!!!
Pin the zipper in place. Add lining and pin to hold.
Use a zipper foot and stitch close to the teeth of the zipper, but not too close, so the fabric doesn’t get caught in the zipper.
Press open and top stitch through all the layers.
Match tab sides evenly. Pin outer fabric: right sides together, and pin lining: right side together.
Using a 1/2 inch seam stitch sides, bottom of the outer fabric, and about 1 inch in on outer edges of the lining. Leave a little opening for turning right side out. But don’t turn it just yet!
Pinch together the corners as shown above. Pin in place.
Stitch to secure.
This is how it should look so far. See the opening in the lining? Good! Push the outer layer thru that little opening, turning it right side out.
Now that it is right side out, pin that little opening closed. To close the opening you can either stitch by hand or machine stitch.
YeeHaw!!! This turned out so cute! What do you think. Let me know if you try this. I would love to see your pouches!
