It was the summer of 2013 and the baby bird was finally ready to leave the nest. It only took this one little over 21 years. Our oldest left when he was 18 to join the Air Force. The middle son was 19 when he left for Marine boot camp. Baby bird was born when I was 40 years old.
I thought it was funny to say, “I would rather be 40 than pregnant!” Surprise! It was a wonderful surprise! But now, it was time!
Joe and I married in 1972 and I had a young son so it was instant family for him. 41 years later and we had an empty nest! Finally!
We assured the baby bird that we loved him and and he could come back and visit but his nest was no longer his. He knew that when his tail lights were at the end of the block that his room was going to be transformed into my studio. I had been using a little round table in the guest room as my “Creative Space”.
He had begged for black walls. We gave in but not to black paint. Instead, we covered the walls with black fabric stapled into place. It was easy to take it down and the red and yellow paint was easy to deal with, especially when I decided to texture the walls.
He took all the furniture with him to his new home away from home. After the room was cleared of all but a few of my pieces, we covered everything with plastic so that the mess we were going to make would be easier to clean up. Now, don’t ask why I didn’t move those pieces out because I don’t have a clue.
Don’t you just love the space in this room? It is 14 feet wide by 24 feet long. There are 2 small windows and one light fixture. I was going to need more light.
Joe removed the popcorn ceiling which was a good job for his 6’9″ stature. HERE is a great article on how to remove the popcorn texture. This post contains some affiliate links for some of the equipment we used. Disclosure statement.
I textured the walls and we painted it wedding cake white. He painted the high parts and I did the low parts. We were a great team.
We hired an electrician to put a ceiling fan in the center of the room and install 2 fluorescent light fixtures. Now, I have great light for creating my artwork.
The only thing left to do was FINISH! Our home has beautiful, original wood floors from the 50’s. So the next task – refinish the wood floors. But you will have to come back to see the results.
Before I leave, I want to offer you a FREE “NEST” print. See that cute little pop-up on the right side! Just sign up to get your free print. Your print will not have the watermark.
Hop over to PART 2. There is a bonus video with a bit of inspiration for your “Nest” print.
I would love to see your “Creative Space”.
